Ukrainian officials say they've intercepted a plot to assassinate Volodymyr Zelenskyy. What happens if the country lost the 'public face' of the war

The recent apprehension of several individuals purportedly involved in a scheme to eliminate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy allegedly orchestrated by Russian operatives adds to a string of reported plots.

According to the country's security service, this instance involves a "network of agents" acting on directives from the Kremlin's espionage arm.

Despite previous threats to his life, Mr. Zelenskyy, the former comedian who assumed the presidency, has remained undeterred.

Nevertheless, analysts caution that a successful assassination could have profound ramifications, impacting both frontline Ukrainians and global solidarity with the nation's cause.

Here's the unfolding narrative:

A "network of agents" implicated in the assassination plot

In a communication via Telegram, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) disclosed its exposure of an alleged network receiving directives from Moscow.

Among those apprehended were two colonels from Ukraine's State Security Administration, tasked with safeguarding high-profile figures, including the president.

Additionally, the SBU claims to have thwarted another plot targeting military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov, slated for execution "before Easter."

Detailing the scheme, the SBU alleged a multi-step plan involving reconnaissance, rocket strikes, drone attacks, and attempts to erase evidence.

The inclusion of Mr. Budanov as a target alongside Mr. Zelenskyy was not surprising to experts, given his prominence and strategic role in countering Russian aggression.

SBU Director Vasyl Maluk asserted personal oversight of the investigation, framing the intended attack as a "gift to Putin before the inauguration."

A history of alleged assassination attempts

This recent episode follows a pattern of foiled assassination plots against Mr. Zelenskyy, with reports indicating numerous prior attempts.

In one instance, shortly after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a senior advisor to the president cited over a dozen thwarted efforts.

Ukrainian intelligence had previously detained an individual allegedly aiding Russian authorities in planning an airstrike during one of Mr. Zelenskyy's visits.

Despite these challenges, Mr. Zelenskyy maintains a pragmatic stance, entrusting his security detail while emphasizing the need for vigilance.

The significance of Mr. Zelenskyy's role

Mr. Zelenskyy's trajectory from entertainer to statesman has positioned him as a pivotal figure in Ukraine's struggle against external aggression.

Internationally, he serves as the face of Ukraine's resistance, advocating for support and resources crucial for the nation's defense.

While domestic support has seen fluctuations, Mr. Zelenskyy's leadership remains integral to Ukraine's resilience.

His demise would not only disrupt the country's governance but also jeopardize established international alliances and support networks.

Preparedness for contingencies

Acknowledging the persistent threats, international officials, including US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, affirm the existence of contingency plans to ensure continuity of governance in the event of Mr. Zelenskyy's demise.

Such preparations underscore the gravity of the situation and the collective commitment to safeguarding Ukraine's stability amid ongoing challenges.
