Official: Russia hits power plant in Donetsk Oblast

On May 5, Deputy Head of Mykolaivka City Military Administration, Volodymyr Proskunin, revealed that the Sloviansk Thermal Power Plant in Donetsk Oblast had been targeted by Russian forces. The attack involved the use of five heavy artillery rockets, resulting in damage to various areas within the power plant. This incident is part of a larger pattern of Moscow increasingly carrying out missile and drone strikes on Ukraine's critical infrastructure, including multiple thermal power plants.

One such power plant that has been targeted is the Trypillia plant, which supplies electricity to Kyiv, Zhytomyr, and Cherkasy oblasts. The Russian forces utilized a self-propelled 300 mm multiple rocket launcher to carry out the attack on the Sloviansk Thermal Power Plant. Of the five rounds fired, four contained cluster munitions, further exacerbating the damage caused.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported as a result of the attack. However, the extent of the damage caused is currently unknown. Additionally, it remains uncertain whether the power plant is currently operational and generating power. The Sloviansk Thermal Power Plant has a capacity of 830 megawatts and is located just outside the city of Sloviansk.

The city of Mykolaivka, where the Deputy Head of Mykolaivka City Military Administration is based, is located in the northern part of Donetsk Oblast and northwest of Kramatorsk. It has been subjected to daily attacks by Russian forces, highlighting the ongoing conflict and instability in the region.

These attacks on Ukraine's critical infrastructure, particularly its power plants, have significant implications for the country's energy supply and overall stability. The targeting of such facilities by Russian forces demonstrates a deliberate strategy to disrupt and weaken Ukraine's infrastructure, further escalating the conflict between the two nations.
