Russia Accidentally Bombs Itself Again: Reports

Reports indicate that in the midst of airstrikes on Kharkiv, Russia mistakenly targeted its own territory near the Ukrainian border with bombardments. Open-source intelligence sources and media aligned with Ukraine disclosed that during guided glide-bomb operations over Kharkiv, a Russian jet erroneously released munitions over Belgorod. This region, bordering northeast Ukraine, has experienced the brunt of spillover from the ongoing conflict.

Notably, Russia has previously acknowledged similar incidents of inadvertently striking its own territory and parts of eastern Ukraine under its control. Anton Gerashchenko, a former adviser to Ukraine's interior ministry, described a guided bomb landing in a residential area and causing an explosion. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted Russia's use of nearly 70 guided aerial bombs against border communities and front-line positions in the preceding day.

Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of the Belgorod region, reported an explosion in Belgorod resulting in five injuries but no fatalities. Damage to 30 homes and 10 cars occurred, though details about the blast's origin were not provided.

The use of Russian glide-bombs on Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, has intensified in recent months. Employing modified Soviet-era bombs equipped with guidance systems and wings, Moscow targets various locations. These precision-guided bombs, launched beyond Kyiv's air defenses, glide toward their intended targets with devastating impact. Instances of strikes, including those employing guided aerial bombs, have been reported by Ukrainian officials in Kharkiv.

In recent incidents, footage purportedly captured a converted bomb landing in a Russian-controlled village in eastern Donetsk, while an independent media outlet reported Moscow mistakenly dropping a missile on a Belgorod region village. In a previous occurrence, Russia admitted to mistakenly bombing the village of Petropavlovka in the Voronezh region, followed by another incident where a FAB-250 bomb was accidentally dropped on Rubizhne in Ukraine's annexed Luhansk region.
