Russia Launches Overnight Missile Attack, Targets Critical Infrastructure Across Ukraine

Russian forces carried out another large-scale aerial assault on Ukraine early Wednesday morning, May 8th, unleashing missiles from at least eight strategic bombers targeting regions including Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, Poltava, Vinnytsia, Kirovohrad, and Ivano-Frankivsk.

The attack aimed at crucial infrastructure, causing damage across multiple regions. Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko confirmed the strike, revealing that energy infrastructure such as electricity generation and transmission systems had been hit. This escalation follows recent intensified aerial assaults by Russia, particularly targeting energy infrastructure.

Among the potentially affected facilities is the Ladyzhynska Thermal Power Plant, boasting a capacity of 1,800 MW. Reports suggest a missile was directed towards the village where the plant is located, though confirmation is pending.

Serhii Borzov, Head of the Vinnytsia Regional State Administration, disclosed an assault on critical infrastructure in the region without specifying the exact target. Meanwhile, in Kyiv, the State Emergency Service reported damage to a civil infrastructure facility in the Brovarsky district. In Zaporizhzhia, the regional center endured missile strikes, resulting in damage to critical and civil infrastructure.

Philip Pronin, Head of the Poltava Regional State Administration, confirmed the use of Russian kamikaze drones, Shahed-136s, in the region. A fire ensued at the attacked site, fortunately without reported injuries. Maxim Kozitsky, Head of the Lviv Regional State Administration, alerted of a Russian missile en route to Stryi. Air defense forces were activated, yet further details on the attack are awaited.

While initial reports mention fires at some targeted sites, casualty information remains unavailable. The Ukrainian Air Force has yet to furnish specifics regarding the extent of damage inflicted by the Russian missile and drone assault, occurring overnight between May 7th and 8th.
